Grass typically struggles to grow around the base of trees due to lack of sunlight and competing for water with the tree’s roots. Mulching around your trees is not only a great alternative, it is beneficial to your tree’s health because:
• Mulch insulates the soil helping to provide a buffer from hot temperatures.
• Mulch retains water helping to keep the roots moist.
• Mulch minimizes weeds to help prevent root competition.
• Mulch helps prevent soil compaction.
• Mulch reduces lawn mower damage.
Pull Mulch away from the tree trunk (RIGHT WAY Diagram) as it allows moisture to escape, preventing the growth of fungus & minimizing rot & decay. Mounding mulch up around the tree trunk can lead to fungus, rot and decay and ultimately lead to the tree’s death (WRONG WAY Diagram)
